Brief History of Allianz

Carl Von Theme and Wilhelm Von Finck founded Allianz in Berlin on the 5th of February 1890. In 1893, Allianz opened its first international branch office in London and sold its first products, which were marine and accident policies, to its German clientele looking for coverage abroad. Seven years later, the company became the first insurance company to obtain a license to distribute corporate policies. This opened up opportunities as the company expanded to other markets in the US, Netherlands, Italy, Belgium, France and the Baltic States led by a new sole proprietor Paul Von Naher in 1904.

The success was short-lived as the company suffered an early disaster in 1906 when the San Francisco earthquake caused the company a major loss of 300,000 marks in profit. One year later, the company acquired Fides Insurance, a company that focused on home invasion insurance. In 1911 the company began selling machinery breakdown policies, making it the first company in the world to sell machine breakdown insurance. They also offered automobile insurance in 1918. Eighty-six years later, Allianz boasts a global workforce of 15,000 employees, a customer base of over 86 million customers worldwide and numerous subsidiaries in more than 70 countries.
