Pros & Cons

  • The best thing about working at Escient is the culture and people. Right from the recruiting process to Day 1 to 6 months in, people were willing and open with their time, assistance and knowledge (which they have in spades). The culture is also unmatched with a passion to truly live out key values along with creative and fun social events. For both of these reasons I feel fully supported to perform my role and learn as much as I can.
  • A very supportive environment. I have been made to feel like an equal among all my colleagues despite my title as a graduate and have always felt like I have a voice and play an active role in the company
  • The graduate program is a great environment to learn and try new ideas or ways of working. The team that run it are super supportive and encouraging. There are also lots of initiatives going on within the company that new starters can get involved in if they wish (Diversity and Inclusion, RAP etc.) that make you feel connected to those in other regions. The Communities of Practice are also good forums for any issues or challenges you’re facing on client sites and just great for connecting with other people working in the same area as you but on other engagements.
  • The incredible opportunities that are given to graduates so early in their careers. Being able to take ownership of key deliverables (with the support of my colleagues) was a big confidence boost and also helped me learn more about my own skills and interests.
  • The people and mentoring that I got here from specific people was the best. As an introduction to the workplace and when you're still figuring out what is important to you and how you work, it has the foundations to transition you from university to working life very well. You're also very supported in your job, no matter the task.
  • Sometimes things are too easy - feels like I need more of a challenge
  • The worst thing about working at Escient is that there isn’t a large amount of opportunity to work on projects with International clients. As Escient continues to grow I believe they will gradually tap into that market and expand.
  • Given Escient was only started 8 years ago the size of the organization means there is a lot of change occurring at a very quick rate which can be frustrating to deal with at times.
  • Sometimes there are unrealistic expectations around capacity. Being a consulting firm, we are expected to work full-time for clients but also juggle internal initiatives and meetings, which can be difficult. It feels like if you say "no" to the internal meetings and support that it will impact your reputation within the company, so there's periods of high stress and long work days when you're trying to do it all.
  • The company is no longer a small-scale or start-up organization. It has been growing into a mid- size enterprise-based organization, hence, the transformation changes internally would require you to have a bit of patience to understand and embrace these changes.

There is a clear promotion pathway and expectations set about what you need to achieve to apply for a promotion. I feel that I have a clear idea of what my career progression would look like at Escient, and there are opportunities to specialise (and change your specialty) throughout your career.

Culture

Culture
Our organisational culture is exemplary. Top-down communication is transparent, open and regular. All employees have an opportunity to provide feedback and contribute to internal initiatives. Senior and experienced consultants are eager to offer mentorship and guidance and most employees make a strong effort to make others feel welcome and supported. There are a range of socialising opportunities both during and after hours. There is no unhealthy culture or expectations regarding staff/team drinks. I have encountered no negative office politics in my 13 months at the company.

Diversity
8.8
Diversity
Escient is extremely diverse with people from a range of backgrounds and actively encourages diversity in this way. Internally there are several groups that promote awareness for issues. However, externally this is simply portrayed in the values that each employee exhibits. The company is very understanding and assisting you in any outside of work issues thus keeping retention high.

Satisfaction

Satisfaction
My role as a graduate consultant is quite varied throughout the week and depends if I am working on a client or not. Day to day responsibilities will also differ depending on the engagement. However a typical engagement will involve morning and afternoon check-ins with your project team along with interviews and potentially workshops to identify or solve certain business problems. Often the engagement will be set in the backdrop of a wider project and thus coordinating with different stakeholders is paramount. Outside of client engagements, there are many learning opportunities including specialist communities of practice, lunch and learns and weekly graduate development sessions.

Escient's leaders are pretty great. They're all approachable and personable. You have the ability to build a relationship with your pod lead in a way that works for your style and theirs. Because they're only responsible for a small number of team members they have the time to get to know you and really understand how to optimise your experience.

Office Work Environment
Our office is fit for purpose, located very conveniently and with good facilities. If more people were to attend the office on a regular basis, it may become crowded. We have a dress-for-your- day dress code, meaning the employee is empowered to use common sense to dress appropriately based on the day's work requirements. You can wear casual within the office if there is no need to dress formally.

As I applied for a graduate position at Escient, the interview process was well rounded and refreshing. The process consisted of 1 phone interview, 1 teams interview, a case study panel with company directors and a final face to face interview with the regions managing director. The entire process was both refreshing, challenging and insightful. This chosen structure of the interview process enabled me to express my qualities and experiences both at work and in overall life.

Escient is very focused on delivering value and good work over grinding over the top work hours. I have great flexibility in the hours I work however when it comes to client work naturally important meetings need to be prioritized.
