Career Prospects at CSIRO

Please tell us about promotion possibilities and fill us in on what it takes to move up the ranks.
As a summer intern you are not guaranteed to stay on following the contracted period. However the supervisors have made it know that if the project is at a stage where another person could be kept on/ you are performing well their is a possibility of being hired. Additionally gaining the experience with CSIRO over the summer and networking there is extremely beneficial for future job applications.
Intern, Melbourne
The opportunity to potentially work casually has risen before, however, to work alongside university studies, the pay is too little for me to consider this a viable option, rather than working nights in a retail position.
Intern, Newcastle
I believe that I am already very employable, but due to my background something like this helps a great deal since it demonstrates my flexibility (I'll have a math degree, but I have work experience in space & astronomy and data science too). My hope is to continue broadening my horizons, and this project helps extremely.
Graduate, Sydney
It is a bit hard to distinguish this at this stage. My job here will terminate at the end of my summer contract, with no potential to continue past this date. I do have to return to full time university this year and that was the aim of this job; to grant real, career experience in the university break. I have a strong belief that my time here and connections made will give me a great advantage if I return to apply for a new position here at CSIRO after my degree. Perhaps then I'd have more insight into the larger company structure and the potential for career progression.
Graduate, Canberra, ACT
Although this position does not guarantee advancements in the company, I believe that by having prior experience working with/in CSIRO, I will be a better candidate for future CSIRO roles I apply for. I have also been offered the opportunity to complete a PhD with my current team if I so desire in the future.
Graduate, Townsville
I have no experience in this yet
Intern, Bribane
It is irrelevant to me as of now
Intern, Herston
I got offered to do an honours project here after my internship ends, so I'm looking forward to that
Intern, Sydney
While there are good career prospects if you can become a full-time employee. May change soon as reports are soon to be published on the future prospects of the organisation, with an expected emphasis on hiring new staff to handle future challenges and new/emerging fields.
Intern, Melbourne
Research itself is a very competitive field
Intern, Perth
There is definitely heaps of opportunities to talk to people about moving forward in research if that's what you want to do.
Intern, Sydney
It feel like there is a good chance of coming back due to contacts made in this position.
Intern, Hobart
As an intern I am not sure what is available to me at the end of the project but I do think it is likely that having done this I will be a much more desirable candidate if I apply for jobs here in the future.
Intern, Hobart
I'm only on the first rung of the ladder, but I think being able to socialise and network with others opens the door to opportunities and gets you noticed by people who are looking for people to help out. being good at what you do is very important
Graduate, Hobart
For a student to continue work at CSIRO they must undertake a PhD and receive a scholarship from CSIRO. They are then co-supervised by a CSIRO researcher. Landing a scholarship is a bit easier given your connections but there is no guarantee your supervisor will have funding for one. Then after a PhD you would apply for a Post Doc, successful completion of which may finally land you a staff position.
Intern, Sydney
I am only at the company for the summer but I am confident this position would enable me to pursue further opportunities at the company later into my career after I have graduated.
Intern, Melbourne
I don not know of any job/promotion to CSIRO after this, a PhD and honours would probably first be necessary, the internship may help somewhat if I want to work here.
Intern, Canberra
I hope there is a future for me at CSIRO, because I love it here!
Intern, Brisbane
I have already been offered a PhD scholarship after (or even before if I wish) I complete my Graduate Program. I was also offered another position at the same organisation within a couple weeks of joining. The process for promotion is robust and transparent from what I have seen.
Graduate, Newcastle
I think showing initiative, being willing to take on more than just the bare minimum of what is required, and also being personable and easy to get along with are what is requires to be promoted. It is a bit more complicated in research, because there is pressure to publish when you're in higher positions and the workload increases significantly, so some do have those skills but choose not to be a higher rank due to that pressure and workload which is understandable. I regularly receive updates on promotion opportunities in my inbox and on LinkedIn for CSIRO, and I don't believe it would be unachievable to achieve promotions if you wanted to get to a certain level.
