Pros & Cons

  • Social Events - Network with same team and people from other teams Pathways - Professional development Managers - Best in mentoring Graduate Program
  • Work-life balance, friendly and supportive coworkers and managers
  • Flexibility within the team (WFH, work from other offices, etc) Interesting and challenging project work for learning and development Great work life balance and social work events
  • Access to working on some of the biggest and most exciting projects, great team culture, easy get assistance from some of the best engineers in the country, access to high end engineering software, flexibility in working from home (provided with a laptop etc)
  • Abundant training resources, exposure to projects to develop the knowledgebase. Structured program to end as a autonomously working professional. Good mentorship and guidance from senior team.
  • Can sometimes be overly busy
  • The size of the company and occasional impersonality
  • I work at a consultancy and so the workload can be really up and down - this is just the nature of the role not necessarily just the company. Some weeks I am really busy (which I don't mind) and other weeks I feel as though I contribute very little to the team. I also struggled with working from home during lockdown, but my company were very supportive of that and encouraged me to take time for my mind or to socialise (with colleagues or beyond) as I needed it.
  • Pressure from responsibilities and tight timelines, can feel overwhelming at times, thrown into "the deep end" occasionally
  • Filling time sheets are putting me in a pressure to use time very wisely but for starters it can be a problem, I am struggling to find billable work right now.

Career Prospects
It's a big company and there is opportunity to move around. We also have a flexible but somehow structured process for discussing performance and goals etc. These chats are used to check that you're happy with what you're doing or if you want something different to work on. When you feel you're ready you can also use this time to tall about promotion and whether there is any gap in your skills vs what is expected.

Culture

Culture
I really enjoy the culture of my team. My direct team understands the workload I should have as a graduate and they do not have unrealistic expectations of my skill level. Our company supports flexible work hours and working from home, which I think is very important for myself and many people. My team generally seem to have a good work life balance, but some of the more senior staff seem to be active at all hours (although in some cases I understand this is part of their flexible hours of work arrangements). Hierarchy - we have national executives, regional executives and then team managers, then associates, principals, seniors and other staff. Teams beyond mine, like some of the engineers, seem to have less balance in some aspects of work life, from what I have seen. Work has lots of opportunities to be social, we have young professionals events, office events and our office teams like to get coffee or lunch regularly. Sometimes the more senior staff are harder to get to socialise between work and family commitments.

Diversity

Diversity
From what I've seen, there is strong and frequent support for women, ethnic minorities and LGBT. Constant events are held within the company for support, and I feel that the company culture is very inclusive. Company participates in some outreach programs to help promote STEM career opportunities/careers. Specifically supporting SID school which inspires Aboriginal and Torres Strait islanders to pursue a STEM Career.

Management
8.7
Management
The whole team works quite closely together, so access and communication with managers is frequent and open. Dialogue is maintained regarding workloads, how things are going, etc. Recognition and both positive and constructive feedback is common.

Office Work Environment
8.8
Office Work Environment
Office space is nice to be in, with plants everywhere, nice lighting, plenty of non-desk spaces to be used for quick collaboration such as small booths, meeting rooms, whiteboards and large tables. Dress code standard for office work but is not incredibly strict, with casual fridays every week.

Recruitment

Recruitment
Initial application with options to select preferences for sector of engineering etc. Next stage was an online skills assessment, followed by a one way interview of two in-depth questions. This step allowed for unlimited time to read the questions and prepare an answer, which was greatly appreciated as this allowed time to really think and provide a truthful answer. After being successful in both these stages, a video interview with a few members of the company from the team I would be joining was conducted. Following this was a phone call with an offer. After accepting offer, references were asked to fill out a written reference through a 3rd party service. In the lead up to starting the job, there were monthly graduate pre- start sessions that covered different areas of the business and what they do.

Salary
Annual Salary Reviews make me feel like I won't have to force a conversation about my salary and that it will always be focused on by the senior members of the team allowing me to focus on just doing good work, knowing it will be recognised. Employee recognition rewards, Employee assistance program, Working outside office agreements, Self funded additional leave, gym membership discounts, private health insurance benefits, social club events, professional industry membership support, etc

Training
7.8
Training
Formal graduate and on boarding training is quite comprehensive, however is quite generalised as is only natural in a company with such diverse roles. Topics include company specific policies and safety procedures, general health and safety (e.g. ergonomics, wfh safely). Graduate program deals with how to foster emerging professional roles, communication and expectations, managing time, etc. On the job training is great as there is opportunity to work on a wide range of projects. Colleagues have a wide range of knowledge to share.

Work Hours
8.7
Work Hours
I work 37.5 hours per week and the company advertises that they support flexible working - the core hours are 10-3 pm where you are expected to work, but can start/finish early or late. I don't know of anyone that takes advantage of this in my team though. I have gone on work field trips and had the option to get overtime or take it as time in lieu.
