The Story of Vodafone Australia

Vodafone Australia is part of the TPG Telecom Group which had 5.25 million mobile customers as of 31 December 2020. Vodafone itself is the third largest mobile network operator in Australia. However, it has one of the world's most advanced networks, and arguably the best IoT network in Australia, although some regional areas still experience less optimal performance.

Vodafone entered the Australian market in October 1993, when it first provided mobile phone services with the launch of its 2G GSM network. In 2009, UK-owned Vodafone Australia agreed to merge with its competitor, Hong Kong-based Three Mobile. In 2010, they became a unified network under the Vodafone brand.

The company has offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth, and a contact centre in Hobart. Their platform uses world-leading technology and a team of experts to bring total connectivity into people’s businesses and homes.

Culture & vibe

Vodafone believes that the secret to its business’ sustainability is its people and partners. That is why they strive to create a diverse and inclusive environment where people can be at their best every day just by being themselves at work. When people are at their best, they can get the best results for customers and for the business. The company wants employees to feel like their contribution matters.

Technology and customer needs are constantly changing, and it is their job to change with them. The work environment is fast-paced and highly competitive, and people bring significant energy to their work, so they need to invest in each individual to maximise their potential and elevate their performance.

They are committed to creating a culture that enables performance through regular conversations, empowered leadership, loads of learning and development, workplace flexibility, and rewards and recognition for everything their people do.

Recruitment process

Basically, the recruitment process at Vodafone consists of the following stages: You should apply online through their Career site, and they will conduct digital screening. If you are shortlisted, they will contact you and invite you to interviews. If they think you will be suitable for the role, they will also check on your references before sending an offer. If you accept this offer, you will be entering the onboarding process.

They are all about creating a place where everybody belongs, so they encourage people to apply for a role that they are interested in, even if your experience does not align perfectly with every qualification in the job description.

Career prospects

Through their Enabling Performance program, employees are encouraged to work on their future growth and development. The focus is on regular conversations with their manager, clear goals that ladder up to their purpose priorities as a business, and two-way feedback enabling their progress and growth.

The development programs also support current and emerging leaders, as well as build diverse successors for their businesses and other Vodafone businesses across the world.

The Foundation’s purpose is to create opportunities to improve the health, well-being, and education of Australian communities in need. Since 2002, it has donated more than $26 million to a range of important causes and organisations that have used mobile technology to improve the health of Australians.

The Foundation has partnered with the Garvan Institute of Medical Research for a project called Genomics in the Cloud (aimed at building a new database of genetic information that is more representative of Australia's cultural diversity). It also partnered with Infoxchange on a project called Connected Communities (co-design community solutions to improve disaster preparedness and community resilience).

What Graduates Say About Them
  • The support provided for Graduates and forming close bonds with the other graduates. Also the company perks are great as well!
  • Technology changes very often and I get a lot of exposure to these technologies very often. The changes I make to the network can affect a lot of customers therefore before any change is made a very detailed analysis has to be done to understand the impact of any change and how to best progress through such a change. The people I work with are very friendly, professional and highly knowledgeable in their respective fields, coming in as a graduate I had 1000's of questions and everyone I asked has the grace and patience of explaining various things to me with great detail. The support and encouragement I have received to empower myself is unlike anything I have had before and makes me feel very secure in my role.
  • Flexible working arrangements, casual dress code, lack of hierarchy, challenging and meaningful work on offer, great colleagues, awesome new building and state of the art technology.
  • Great range of working experiences, as a graduate get to experience the company with the added benefit of being provided with the support to help you learn and grow both personally and professionally
  • Support and learning is always available. Fun and vibrant culture.
  • I had to move from my home back in Melbourne, but this gave me an oppurtunity to make new friends and network with professionals in another state.
  • Lack of governance structure in certain areas
  • Learning and development program for Graduates, Large discrepancies between the funding of different departments, Not enough health and wellbeing initiatives.
  • There are no drawbacks that I can identify. Yes, sometimes my job role is challenging and I get thrown in the deep end but throughout all these experiences I've always had everyone behind me to help me along the way.
  • Inefficient processes - task responsibility changes hands before the resolution
