Mark, generalist stream

Seeing how government works from the inside is valuable, no matter what you want to do with your life.

Mark discovered a passion for criminology after trying a variety of different majors at university. He loved the diversity it offered as well as how much it could contribute to developing policy. He was keen to see inside the ‘black box’ of government and understand how it functioned.

“The grad program seemed like a great first step after graduating, particularly to gain a range of experiences across the public service. I feel like building that broad base of experience is important for an Arts graduate because it can help frame your thinking about a future career.”

Through his rotations Mark was able to work on a broad variety of different projects at different stages of development, giving him that desired insight into government function. But one of the things that really stood out to him was the approach to hybrid working.

“I think it’s great that each team I worked in thought critically about when they needed us to be in person and what being in person should ideally achieve – so when you do come in, it’s worthwhile.”
