Pros & Cons

  • Challenging work and you get to directly see the results of your work.
  • High-performance trading firm with informal beach culture.
  • The organisation has a strong focus on teamwork and cooperation including after hours.
  • Free meals (breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner if you need to stay late), yoga, PT sessions, and massages one day a week. Also there is a pool table and beach across the road to use during breaks.
  • Management style is hands off however supportive, it leaves a lot of room for autonomy and ones own ideas alongside assigned work.
  • The company is very involved with it's charitable foundation, and many employees are engaged too.
  • High performance environment can sometimes be challenging and stressful.
  • Although overall the structure is very flat and everyone really treats you as a person rather than as a number, the aggressive attitude towards success can at times be a bit uncalibrated.
  • I work 50-60 hours, but the company is flexible.
  • Moderate formal training, the employee will have to learn by reading outside of work hours (although this isn't explicitly stated, I would say that it's pretty much mandatory). This is being incrementally improved however through an in house scheme.
  • The working environment can be stressful due to the fast paced nature of trading.

Culture

Culture
Expectations are very high but the culture can be laid back and very social. Working across from the beach means we often swim or each our lunch there together. It is very easy to get a hold of anyone in the company and they are happy to have a chat if they're not busy.

Management
In general, the expectations are made clear and you will be told pretty fast if you are not meeting them. The feedback is direct without much sugar-coating which I prefer. Praise is not usually shared as often.

Office Work Environment
The dress code is very casual. During the summer months boardies and thongs and a midday break at the beach is strongly encouraged. The office space is open and well lit with a kitchenette, pool table and veranda for eating lunch in the sun.

Recruitment
Starting off with some online aptitude tests, then followed by quant and dev interviews which are really enjoyable.

The pay starts off very decent and then there is real potential to bump it up with bonuses, depending on how much value you add to the company in terms of trading strategies.

Training
There is an entire training program set up in the company with compulsory, recommended and optional courses based on your position. The tasks I am put on also have given me a huge amount of experience and knowledge in important skills such as financial understanding and coding.

Work Hours
While the number of hours would be larger than you average Monday to Friday job, those hours are very flexible and it is not uncommon for employees to take midday breaks to the beach while they are waiting on code to compile or other things.

Alongside environmental based work in the foundation, lunch arrives in cardboard boxes wherever possible, everyone recycles in the office.
