Jock Blacket

One of the most interesting things about being based on site is the opportunity to see how my work contributes to the operation as a whole

For Finance Graduate Jock Blacket, the lure of a regional lifestyle was a big factor in joining the Thiess Graduate Program.

Following completing his Commerce/Business Management degrees at The University of Queensland in Brisbane, Jock was looking for a role that would provide him with a chance to utilise and expand his skills and give him the opportunity to live outside of the capital.

Keen to join the mining industry, and based on the positive experiences of others, Jock took up a Graduate role with Thiess in February 2022.

Currently based at Lake Vermont, Jock said the role offered lots of diversity.

“One of the most interesting things about being based on site is the opportunity to see how my work contributes to the operation as a whole,” Jock said.

“Managing and reporting costs, completing end-of-month reports for Head Office and clients as well as supporting the Lead Team with project requests gives me a great chance to apply all of my skills."

“There are a lot of consistent processes when you work in Finance but, on-site, I get to see the whole mining process and the way our work is used, which is quite unique.”

Jock encouraged others to consider the Thiess Graduate Program for both the career and lifestyle opportunities it offered.

“I think it’s really important to experience life in different locations,” Jock said.

“After graduation, I was keen for an interesting role in a growing and exciting sector as well as a move and the Thiess program ticked all the boxes.

“I’ve learnt a lot at Lake Vermont and will soon move to the new Olive Downs Project which is under construction – a further chance to learn more about the mining industry and build on my skills and experience.”

“To any students considering mining and working with Thiess, I would say, just give it a go!”
