What's your job about?
My employer delivers software that provides a compelling customer experience. As a developer here at TechnologyOne, my responsibility is to cater to this need and build great products that will make our customers’ lives easier. My main responsibilities include product enhancements (for SCM) and bug fixing. If you have basic business knowledge about our products, some coding skills, and are familiar with the TechnologyOne product architecture and Ci Anywhere patterns, it will be a good starting point to learn more.
What's your background?
I was born in Calicut, a small coastal town in south India. When I joined the workforce, I was working as a sales engineer for an electrical firm in Muscat. I wasn't very fond of this job because it was totally unrelated to what I had learned. After working for three years, I decided to study again and that was the beginning of my journey to Australia. I came to Australia as a student and was doing odd jobs until I joined TechnologyOne as an intern. This job was advertised and I was quick to respond because I always wanted to learn about enterprise software and I had heard about the mentoring program TechnologyOne had. After two unsuccessful attempts, I got lucky the third time.
I started my full-time employment with TechnologyOne during July 2016 and it has been a good, fruitful year. TechnologyOne has presented a novice programmer like me with a platform to learn, explore and develop my skills.
Could someone with a different background do your job?
It’s possible for a person with a different backgrounds to do this job, because here at TechnologyOne, I’ve met employees with different background working as developers. I honestly believe it’s not about your background, it’s about your passion to learn. With hard work and perseverance, the sky is the limit here.
What's the coolest thing about your job?
The thing I love most about my job is the working environment. Everybody is friendly and helpful. The R&D team is very good and we get to work with the latest tools and technology. This helps a novice programmer to explore and acquire new skills.
What are the limitations of your job?
Most of the work I’ve done is to do with product enhancement and bug fixes. Not all bugs are the same and some have their limitations. Overall it is the learning of the product and systems that is important and that comes with a steep learning curve.
