Pros & Cons

  • Working alongside like-minded people, great colleagues, great leadership.
  • There are many levels of support, and there is genuine care that is felt from the organisation to us.
  • Doing my masters while working.
  • A lot of support and understanding. It feels like everyone is very real and takes things on practically as opposed to being held down by rules.
  • The culture is very supportive. Changing careers can be very stressful, but I have found the transition to be seamless because of the training and mentorship offered by TFA.
  • The impact I am able to have towards educational equity.
  • High workload and no breaks for the duration of the 2-year program.
  • Challenging.
  • The small stipend covers the first 3 months of training before full employment begins.

Corporate Social Responsibility
TFA itself is an organisation dedicated to educational equity. The whole company is an initiative to increase access of schools to quality teachers.

Culture
9.3
Culture
The culture is extremely collaborative, supportive, progressive and caring. At the Associate level, there is a lot of socialisation and collegiality, and at the higher levels (support and administration) there is an entrenched sense of equality and helpfulness.

Recruitment
Although the recruitment process was intense, I felt that it was fair and focused on finding the right culture fit. I felt that I could be myself and that my honest answers were valued (as opposed to feeling like I had to respond in a certain employer-friendly way!)

First full-time job so the pay is more than anything I'm used to. Love the salary packaging too.

Training

Training
Prior to beginning teaching, there was a 6-week Intensive which addressed all the basic needs prior to stepping into the classroom. It was very full-on but prepared us as well as possible. Now that I am teaching, I have a TFA mentor who visits frequently to help me improve my teaching. She is wonderful and has been a great help to me so far.

The TFA program is designed to be intense! It's full-time employment with a full-time Masters degree, but the hours are worthwhile.

Virtual meetings where possible, rather than travelling for meetings. Flights are carbon offset.
