What is the job about?

As a superannuation graduate, my role is to assist my managers in completing the year-end compliance work such as preparing the financial statements and annual tax returns for Self-managed super funds (SMSF).

As SMSF’s are required to be audited every year, another aspect of my job is to liaise with our external auditors and attend to any queries they may have in order to finalise the audit.

What is your background?

During high school, I was always very interested in sport and accounting and knew that I wanted to pursue a career in one of these industries– I know – two completely different things!

After school, I went to university to study nutrition and soon found that this wasn’t the path for me. I then was given the opportunity to work in an accounting firm for a couple of months and really enjoyed the experience. As a result, I decided I wanted to further my career in Accounting and completed Certificate IV in Accounting, Diploma of Accounting & Bachelor of Business mastering in Accounting. While I was studying I worked with my father who owns an auto-electrical business helping him with payroll and other small accounting jobs.

I became a Mazarian in October 2020 & have never looked back! Starting a new job from home definitely was challenging and this has been a massive learning curve for me however, it has helped me develop and grow not just in my career but as a person too.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

I do believe someone with a different background to me could do this role. At university, my course didn’t offer a unit specific to SMSF’s however the concept was incorporated in other units. Upon starting in superannuation at Mazars, I completed a lot of outside reading and research in order to expand my knowledge, which I continue to do now as it is important to stay up-to-date with the latest changes in legislation.

What is the coolest thing about your job?

Accurate and reliable administration of your SMSF is very important as you are essentially setting yourself up for when you retire. To assist my manager in this process and to be able to see the benefit it provides to our clients is pretty special.
