Our Graduate Programme

Our philosophy is to recruit and 'grow' our own people, rather than hire people from other businesses. That is why we invest in and manage the long-term growth and development of our people, right from the start.

The Mainfreight Development Programme seeks those willing to get stuck in and who are keen to embrace all kinds of challenges and new experiences.

Roll up your sleeves for a practical and hands-on learning experience at the core of our business. Bringing value to your role, team, branch you will have the ability to grab opportunities with both hands and help paint the world blue.

The graduate program is considered unstructured and doesn't involve set pathways or fixed rotations. To understand the fundamentals you would spend a minimum of 12 months in the operations.

The key to being successful is to utilise the time on the floor and learning what makes our business tick. Having the right attitude and having a team-driven mind-set is also essential. If this sounds like something you can throw yourself into then look no further than Mainfreight.

Once you have learnt the fundamentals of Mainfreight on the operations floor, you will move into other areas of the business where you will get the right mix of autonomy and support. We believe that the right people can learn the specifics of any role so our focus is on helping you develop personal and professional skills that will allow you to take on any role in the business.

We are an ever-changing business and we are constantly reviewing new ways to help our team develop the world-class skills that will lead our business into the future.

Recruitment Process

At Mainfreight we're about making the application process as simple, straight up and personal as possible. We're not into long-winded rounds of interviews or assessment centres. It's about us both finding out whether we have a future together.

At Mainfreight, we work on rolling recruitment. This means that we do not have set intake dates. When an opportunity becomes available with our team, we need great people to fill it as soon as possible. We are always taking applications!

Step 1: First send us your CV and Cover letter.

We like to see the effort you've put in both in your professional life and outside of work. We're looking for people who know the value of hard work and what it means to be well-rounded and interesting. We like to see applications that make the connection between Mainfreight and themselves. What excites you about working at Mainfreight and why do you think you would be a good fit.

Step 2: Are you the right fit?

If your application is successful you will have an interview over the phone or online, it's our first chance to get to know and for us to discuss what a career at Mainfreight may look like for you.

You'll be glad to hear that at Mainfreight we're a friendly bunch! We won't make you jump through a ring of fire during the interview process. Be confident, understand that we're here to get to know you, not interrogate you. Put your best foot forward and show us what you're all about. This will tell us what kind of person you are and what you do in your spare time. We'll treat you like a real person and have a conversation with you.

Step 3: Branch Interview

By this stage we think you would be the right fit for Mainfreight. Our next step is to share your application details with our branches. It is always good to be flexible with location so we can find the right opportunity for you. Ultimately, our Branch Managers have the final say so they want to get to know you. They will want to identify if you are the right fit for their branch and for the opportunity they have available.

Step 4: Pre-employment Checks

If you impress us at your interview you will also need to pass a pre-employment background check and a drug and alcohol test before joining the Mainfreight Team!

Remuneration & Career Growth

The moment you become a member of the Mainfreight family, your career hits overdrive - if you want it to. Anything is possible here because you get to work right alongside the best people and make real-life decisions. You can expect to spend your first few years in New Zealand building your knowledge, skills and understanding of the Mainfreight way. From there, providing you have passion, we promote from within our own global pool of talent and give you the freedom to go as far as you dare.

What Graduates Say About Them
  • Every day is a new challenge and always something different. With freight, everything is ever-changing and constant problem solving which makes every day fun!
  • The team around us are all like family and we have each other's back, it is a pretty special company and they look after you! There are lots of awesome opportunities out there for everyone. Everyone has the 'Bleeding blue' feel in their day-to-day work.
  • The culture. I'm trusted with responsibility, I can make decisions and I'm encouraged to take ownership.
  • The people/the culture! It is incredible how a global company can still feel like a family and I think this is what makes it so special.
  • The people & culture. Family vibes & everyone's willing to help. The autonomy of the job.
  • The long hours can be tiring at times (but to be honest I don't know how I'd get it all done in less time).
  • Sometimes the long days (but it's give and take so not a big deal).
  • I'm nitpicking, sometimes the hours can be long, that's the nature of the work that we do, the customers need their freight, so we need to make that happen so the wider community have access to what they need.
  • The long days. 10-hour days can be rough. But you get used to them quickly.
  • Sometimes the hours can be rough.
