Career Prospects
I have already accelerated my graduate program by 6 months, and have been promoted to a Site engineer. I am currently perfecting am craft and will be pushing for Project Engineer in the next 12-18 months. I have made my career aspirations clear to my senior leaders and they are on board with helping track that progress.

Corporate Social Responsibility
We are constantly striving for innovative ways to reduce our environmental impact and improve our community engagement. Project run community-wide workshops and education centres such as those seen on the Metro Tunnel. I was part of a team which created an Embodied Carbon Model to quantify the Carbon in our projects in order to drive more effective and sustainable solutions.

Culture

Culture
Culture varies between site office and head office. site office has a very old school culture where work is priority, long hours, although fun and interesting. Head office has a very relaxed modern culture, flexible hours although more quiet and less social.

Diversity

Diversity
I was expecting when I first met my team, that there would not be many women around however I was pleasantly surprised that 50% of my team are women in engineering. I think John Holland is really making an effort in recruiting women and respecting them. I find that the staff here are quite diverse and there is an LGBT group active in the workplace that promote events.

Flat out all day every day and love it! Thrown in the deep and learned so much so quickly. It helps when you have the team to support you with a wealth of knowledge and experience to question and learn from. Resilience is one of the most important skills you need to learn in construction and I have built a lot here. Basically working as a Site Engineer from day 1 in earthworks and pavements. Lots of responsibility, lots of opportunity to learn, and more avoid multiple disciplines of works.

Management

Management
Yes, managers are very willing to answer any questions you might have. They encourage and support career and personal development, and they receive training in areas such as mental health. Performance feedback is done in the form of setting goals and having fortnightly meetings to discuss progress.

I work out of the Flinders Gate Office at 180 Flinders St. We have incredible end of trip facilities, a towel service and the latest technology in our meeting rooms; as well as an immersion room. The office is full of green plants and amazing views of Melbourne. The dress code varies, some departments are quite casual whilst my department typically wears business attire or smart casual.

Pay is good, above average for a graduate engineer. They also look after you well in terms of extra leave, maternity and paternity leave and flexible public holidays. I am unsure if graduates receive bonuses.

Training

Training
The company has a range of compulsory training as well as optional learning opportunities and modules. I have learned how to create dashboards and model data in Power BI. As well as improving the art of negotiation and effective communication of feedback.

Work Hours

Work Hours
The company can provide some flexibility, however the hours are long and the culture often makes you work longer hours just through seeing other people doing so even if it isn't specifically stated. Different departments have different flexibility schemes, but working on site provides very little wiggle room to not work long hours.

In my project, there are visible efforts in the environmental footprint but since this is the construction industry, it is a bit more difficult to navigate
