The Story of Credit Suisse Australia

Credit Suisse Australia is a subsidiary of Credit Suisse AG, a Swiss-based firm advising customers in all aspects of finance. It was founded in 1856 and today employs over 50,110 people from more than 150 different nations. Headquartered in Zurich, their operations extend to about 50 countries worldwide.

They established an office in Australia in 1969. With the global business and regional structure, Credit Suisse Australia is administered by its head office in Sydney. It has three divisions of operations. The first is Investment Banking which offers various investment banking as well as securities products and services to companies, government bodies, and institutional clients.

The second is Asset Management which provides products of investment classes such as private equity, hedge funds, credit and commodities. The third is Private Banking which offers services including portfolio management, wealth planning, philanthropy, trust and estate advisory for individuals and families.

Culture & vibe

The company is renowned for its collegiate and supportive culture. They aim to develop team members with in-depth product knowledge and strong execution skills. Co-workers are very professional and willing to disclose their goals or discuss them in a constructive manner. The younger staff are given the possibility to show their skill set.

The work environment is flexible and open to mobility. The work-life balance is good with occasional long hours of work. You may need to learn to keep a calm demeanour in a fast-paced and demanding environment, balancing requests from all over the business, both internally and externally. You will also learn to become proficient at multitasking and managing multiple deadlines.

Recruitment process

The company offers internship programs for students and graduates, such as Summer/Winter Analyst internships (for undergraduate students), and Summer Associate internships (for MBA and JD students or for those with an equivalent degree and at least three years of work experience).

The internships can take between 4 to 11 weeks. As part of the teams, you will learn, grow and contribute to one of their business divisions. If they find extraordinary potential and performance, they may offer a full-time position.

You can also find full-time positions on their Career Portal and submit your CV along with information on your experience, skills, and interests. When applying to the role you are interested in, referrals will increase your chances of interviewing by two times. The recruitment team will contact you to schedule an interview when you meet the initial requirements.

The interview process usually consists of two to three rounds, with one or two mid-level or senior bankers at each round. It can include several structured behavioural questions and some technical questions, depending on your role. It is also a chance for you to get to know the company. If they plan to extend you a job offer, a representative will contact you a short time after the final interviews are completed.

Career prospects

Their international culture and global business provide opportunities for cross-business and regional mobility to help their staff's ongoing development. You are eligible for their internal mobility program after one year of employment with them.

They support your development journey with managers who will create clear objectives with you in line with the business and your team's strategy. Regular reviews will gauge your skills and knowledge, and identify your potential for development. They also provide e-learning courses, instructor-led training, and web-based training.

Benefits

Benefits for the employees may vary but usually include:

Social Contributions

The Credit Suisse APAC Foundation was launched in 2020, and today supports 18 partners in 14 countries. Through strategic multi-year grants, they have helped more than 30,000 disadvantaged people. Their activities in Australia include:

  • Partnering with The Sydney Symphony Orchestra (SSO) and supporting the inaugural Credit Suisse SSO Music Education Program in six schools in Sydney and one school in Melbourne. The program provides them with musical instruments for schools, music enrichment programs, and professional music teaching training for teachers.
  • Partnering with Ardoch, a not-for-profit organization offering support for the education and developing career aspirations of children and young people living in disadvantaged communities. Credit Suisse supports two flagship programs, impacting almost 10,000 secondary students in 14 disadvantaged Victorian and New South Wales schools.
