Trishal Peiris

My goal for the Intergenerational stream is to adjust our lens, to tear down barriers of age-based assumptions and bring together the different age groups here at Cenitex.

Trishal Peiris is the new Intergenerational Stream lead. Trish joined Cenitex as a graduate this year and has enthusiastically embraced many opportunities so far - he's had a very busy six months! Aside from his rotation through the organisation, presently sitting with the Cloud and Hosting team. Trish was also an integral part of the Cenitex Hackathon working group and he enjoys being part of the Social Club too. He is the perfect person to now lead the stream as they continue working on their action plan heading in the second half of the year.

Congratulations on your new role as the Intergenerational Stream Lead. Tell us a little bit about your vision for the stream?

My goal for the Intergenerational stream is to adjust our lens, to tear down barriers of age-based assumptions and bring together the different age groups here at Cenitex. My goal is to take advantage of our differences and enhance mutual learning.

Why should we have an Intergenerational Stream?

I see this as a necessary stream because I want to connect the younger generation with older members of staff at Cenitex.

There are many age-related stereotypes prevalent in society today. We need to question these stereotypes and not make assumptions about people from different age groups. I want to help avoid age stereotyping or stigma and encourage all people at Cenitex to treat people equally no matter your age. This includes raising awareness in relation to inclusive language and being mindful of the terminology we use when referring to older or younger people.

What would you say to a person if they’re interested in joining the stream?

I would say it's a great time to help build a foundation. I'm new to the role and as we continue working on our action plan, for me it’s all about connecting with others and gaining momentum around the topic of generational gaps. It’s a perfect time for people to bring their thoughts and ideas, to have them heard as we prepare to shift into a growth stage.

What are your thoughts on older members of staff working with younger employees to combat stereotypes?

Firstly, I think we have it quite good at Cenitex and I’ve only heard good things about older members of staff from my fellow graduates. I do, however, want to emphasise how much of a difference it makes in getting to know someone regardless of their age. It's good to understand people's stories when you work with them. The bonding aspect of a work relationship honestly goes a long way.

I also want to stress how much I’ve been learning about business psychology and the way Cenitex works. I have gained a lot of technical and transferrable skills so far from my interaction with older people in the workforce. They have much to offer Cenitex through their experience and knowledge, and the younger generation can benefit from this.

What’s a goal you have set for yourself you’d like to accomplish in the next 12 months?

I would like to have established myself as someone who gets things done, someone who puts in the work and most importantly, someone who can lead a group of people the right way.

Tell us about someone you admire, and why?

Marcus Aurelius, because I feel I resonate with some of his notes to himself and I try to take them as life lessons. To name a few; he stresses the idea of training perceptions, being unbothered by things out of our control, viewing obstacles as opportunities and acting for the common good. I feel if listened to and attempted to live by these it would be beneficial to anyone.

What do you enjoy when you’re not working?

I do love a good fantasy book, there’s something about gripping stories I can’t get enough of. I like to get in a few gym sessions throughout the week and see my parents too. And if I can make time, am very fond of road trips and gorgeous views with a side of adrenaline!

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself.  Do you have any special skills or talents that most people don’t know about?

I love to cook! My signature dish is an amazing spaghetti Aglio e Olio.
