Ellen Nagle

When I compare myself now to when I started I have learned so much and still will continue to learn every day!

What's your job about?

McLean Delmo Bentleys is an active accounting and financial services firm that has been delivering remarkable resolutions and contributing to the achievement of people and business for many years. I am a Graduate Accountant - my areas of responsibility are in Business Services and Audit.

As stated previously I work areas of Business Services and Audit. Through my role in Business Services, I help to prepare Financial Accounts, Income Tax Returns, perform day-to-day admin jobs and sit in on client meetings when necessary. Through my role as an audit graduate, I help to complete both on-site and remote audits. Both areas of accounting require me to use various accounting software on a daily basis (eg. MYOB & Xero), prepare concise and clear spreadsheets and work papers, analyse client data, communicate with the ATO and more!

What's your background?

I grew up in Geelong, Victoria, before moving to Melbourne for my current role.

I went to Kardinia International College in Geelong for my high school education and completed my VCE. I then moved on to university and studied for a Bachelor of Commerce at Deakin University at Geelong Waterfront Campus. I majored in Accounting and minored in both Taxation Legislation and Human Resources.

Prior to starting this job, I had little working experience in an accounting firm. However, I had lots of experience working in other workplaces. I have worked since the age of 15 and have experience in Retail, Hospitality, and Warehousing.

Once completing my degree, I decided I wanted a change and moved from Geelong to Melbourne! I have really enjoyed living and working in the inner city.

Outside of work, I love to exercise and catch up with friends/family!

After completing my degree – I decided to look for an accounting position and applied for my current role through seek. I have been working in my current position at MCDB for just under a year.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Yes. I believe someone of a different background could certainly complete my role.

However, I think it would certainly be important to have a Commerce/Business degree especially if working in Accounting. Someone who is a hard worker, diligent and organised could certainly apply for this position.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

I have certainly loved watching how you are able to grow – especially in a graduate role. When I compare myself now to when I started I have learned so much and still will continue to learn every day! I also really enjoy working in a team and having your colleagues to lean on when you need support.

What are the limitations of your job?

There are two sides to every coin.

At some periods during the year, work can be busier especially during the busy season however, I never feel pressured by my superiors. Some work requires quick deadlines but certainly not too overwhelming! We always have the support of our team to talk to if we are feeling as though work is too much. Additionally, we also complete workflow meetings to make sure that work is evenly distributed between our colleagues.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

  • Be yourself! Make sure you are true to who you are and what you believe in.
  • Step out of your comfort zone once in a while! Moving to Melbourne was a great decision for me and certainly was a step out of my comfort zone!
  • Ask questions! If you are unsure about how to complete a task or role simply speak up rather than sitting and wondering what the answer could be.
