Pros & Cons

  • * Flexible working arrangements * Corporate culture is unparalleled * Many opportunities to work in different areas of the bureau * Depending on what section you work in, there are opportunities to work across different teams and drive projects * Agile work environment * Friendly management who genuinely support career progression and career opportunities
  • Supportive work environment, great organizational culture, opportunity to serve the public, the work is interesting, I feel my degree is being utilised in my work, flexible work arrangements (flex time, WFH ability, etc.)
  • Balance between getting to work hard and stretch yourself, and getting to pull back a bit and have a laugh with colleagues.
  • Training and graduate development is outstanding, with practical support for career development. This includes opportunities to work in other departments/sections, senior executive shadowing, and knowledge sharing. All reasonable flexible work options have been considered for individual circumstances.
  • Supportive leadership team, encourage innovation, many opportunities to collaborate, learn and improve upon. The flexibility to allow work/life balance.
  • Limited progression opportunities due to location
  • Steep learning curve, very systems based but this can be seen as an enjoyable challenge for growth opportunities.
  • There isn’t really anything that is terrible. We have activity based workspace which means we move desks everyday which can be a little inconvenient but that is about it.
  • It seems like it might be harder to move up, bulk recruitment does not happen very often and there is not a lot of staff turnover.
  • Hard to get involved in more complex work particularly in satellite offices, some processes can be very routine when working on regular quarterly publications.

There are lots of internal applications, and support for changing roles within the organisation. Graduates are expected to progress quickly.

Corporate Social Responsibility
It is in our meeting and strategy goals that we need to produce useful and accurate data for all Australians.

Culture

Culture
Not very hierarchical within teams; only really where needed to manage workflow and privacy. More hierarchy in the senior executives but really approachable and often open to letting you shadow them/get some mentoring. Lots of people with good senses of humour but serious when need to be. Some social clubs and groups supporting minorities although has been a bit limited with covid. Other socialising team driven, but pretty common for people to e.g. pull together a sports team. Other teams generally happy to help each other out. Good flexibility with work hours. Socialising mostly when at work; amount of socialising outside hours very varied with teams.

Diversity
8.5
Diversity
The ABS has diversity networks for a range of minority groups. I am also LGBT and have never felt judged or in any way negatively impacted by it. I've seen several people in my section go on maternity leave with no issues and part time/flexible work is easily available for those with caring responsibilities.

Office Work Environment
Great central office location within the CBD, with modern facilities and great sit/stand desks for all staff, in a hot desk layout plan. Dress code is neat formal, without being too over the top.

Recruitment

Recruitment
Very good communication throughout each stage of the recruitment process. Instructions were clear and assessments were aligned with the job requirements.

Salary

Salary
Annual salary is pretty standard at my level, additional superannuation is nice. More of a cap in earning potential in the long run, but per hour worked works out well.
7.3
Training
7.3
Training
Lots of opportunities for training through workshops or seminars. As a graduate there is a set development program throughout the year. The skills taught include project management skills and presenting.

Work Hours

Work Hours
Very flexible. Any extra hours worked each day are returned back as "flex time" which can be used later on (such as leaving earlier, taking a day off). Workplace happy for employees to work from home when needed.

Sustainability
General reminders about turning off computers, lights etc.; recycling bins; printing defaults to double sided etc. Mostly good but little things.
