The Atlassian Story

Armed with a credit card and a dream, university friends Mike Cannon-Brookes and Scott Farquhar set out to create Atlassian in 2002.

Now, we’re a team of 8,000+ supporting an international group of 180,000+ customers.

We build tools like Jira, Confluence and Trello to help teams across the world become more nimble, creative, and aligned.

Using those tools, our customers and teams have helped put the Mars Curiosity Rover into space, develop the cochlear implant, and built thousands of products launched to millions of customers around the world.

Our mission is to unleash the potential of every team.

Atlassian Values

At Atlassian, our values guide our business, our product development, and our brand. As our company continues to evolve and grow, these five values remain constant.

Open company, no bullshit

Openness is root level for us. Information is open internally by default and sharing is a first principle. And we understand that speaking your mind requires equal parts brains (what to say), thoughtfulness (when to say it), and caring (how it’s said).

Build with heart and balance

“Measure twice, cut once.” Whether you're building a birdhouse or a business, this is good advice. Passion and urgency infuse everything we do, alongside the wisdom to consider options fully and with care. Then we make the cut, and we get to work.

Don’t #@!% the customer

Customers are our lifeblood. Without happy customers, we’re doomed. So considering the customer perspective - collectively, not just a handful - comes first.

Play as a team

We spend a huge amount of our time at work. So the more that time doesn’t feel like “work,” the better. We can be serious, without taking ourselves too seriously. We strive to put what’s right for the team first – whether in a meeting room or on a football pitch.

Be the change you seek

All Atlassians should have the courage and resourcefulness to spark change – to make better our products, our people, our place. Continuous improvement is a shared responsibility. Action is an independent one.

    Recruitment Process

    Application Process
A lot can change based on the role you’re interested in, but for the most part, here are the steps you can expect as part of your application and interview process.

    1. Complete an application form
    2. Complete online assessment
    3. Final round craft assessments and interviews
    4. Boom, hired!

Atlassian is continuing to hire with all interviewing and onboarding done virtually due to COVID-19.

Not only do they offer guidance on what to expect during each step of the process, but they also share best practices for virtual interviewing and feedback.

Additionally, you’ll work with the same Candidate Experience (CX) coordinator, throughout the entire hiring process. Their CX coordinators are available by email, phone, and even WhatsApp, to field any questions or concerns you might have—including accessibility needs. They will work to ensure you have exactly what is needed throughout the interview process.

Their interview process consists of two stages. They've outlined these below:

    Initial screen

The first stage of their interviewing flow is an introductory call with a recruiter. They’ll use this time to learn more about your experience, share more information about the role, and leave time to answer questions about the company, the team, and what it would be like to remotely take on a new challenge.

    Virtual “On-site”

When they started redesigning their interview process, the first question they asked themselves was: “What will candidates miss about in-person interviews?” They can virtually meet with hiring managers and other team members, and they can also complete exercises online. But what about spending a day at the office?

While nothing can replace an in-person experience, they've collected some alternatives to help provide insight into life at Atlassian. First, spend time with a video made up of found footage from Atlassian's global offices. Second, each CX coordinator shares a presentation detailing their "day in the life" at Atlassian, including their commute, favourite local coffee shops, preferred workspaces, and team meals when they're working on-site.

After successfully completing the interview process, your interviewers will consolidate feedback, and if there's a good fit between your skills and experiences with the open role they will extend an offer.

    Remuneration & Career Growth

Their Graduate program is designed to provide new graduates with real-world experiences to help them achieve professional goals and personal dreams.

    Perks & Benefits

At Atlassian, we offer a variety of benefits to support you, your family and to help you engage with your local community so you can bring your best self to work.

We’re a global company, and each location has unique perks and benefits - some include:

    • Paid time off: We encourage employees to step away from work to relax, recharge, and spend time solo or with family and friends! In addition, tap into leave for Foundation time, unpaid or bereavement leave — for moments that matter in life.
    • Flexible working: We understand that life happens outside of work. That's why we don't expect a typical 9 AM - 5 PM schedule to work for everyone—we offer flexibility for you to do your best work in a way that works for you.
    • Distributed working allowance: No matter where you're working from, we want to ensure you're set up for success. We provide tools and generous financial support to complete an ideal workspace.
    • Fitness & Wellness Allowance: A major part of a healthy lifestyle is staying active! To encourage a balanced lifestyle, Atlassian provides a subsidy for qualified fitness and wellness activities or equipment.
    • Modern Health: Create a personalised care plan to maintain your mental wellbeing through the Modern Health platform.
    • Education & resources: Access to education, training, and resources is critical to achieving goals and moving forward! We offer a learning budget and a library of online courses to support you to reach your personal and professional goals.

    Social Contributions
They created the Atlassian Foundation with the vision of helping make the world better. As a company, they contribute 1% of annual profits, 1% of employee time, and 1% of company equity to the foundation.

    What Graduates Say About Them
    • The company has a fantastic grad culture and allows us to organise our own (fully funded) bonding events.
    • The quality and breadth of the work we're able to do. My team has put me on a variety of different projects over the past 9 months and I've learnt a tremendous amount because of it. I also think Atlassian isn't afraid to really trust it's graduates, and the quality of people is just amazing, I haven't met a single person here who I haven't been able to relate to and get along with.
    • Lots of learning opportunities, great perks (free food, generous allowances, nice offices)
    • Amazing people. Very supportive. Everyone I've encountered has been open to assisting wherever possible. Perks and benefits are excellent. Work life balance is great with the team distributed over at least 3 geographical locations.
    • So much flexibility and the workplace culture is very strong. I genuinely believe they care deeply for their employees.
    • Genuinely I don't have a proper answer for this. I guess the worst thing for me would be Imposter Syndrome, given it's such an incredible company my main fear is that I'm not good enough to work with such brilliant people.
    • Atlassian is a large company so it can be hard to create connections with a lot of different people.
    • How big it is
    • It can sometimes be hard, as a creative, working at a company that is mostly software engineers. It can be challenging when collaborating, due to having different working styles/different personalities sometimes.
    • They don't have an office in Melbourne
