The Story of American Express Australia

American Express started doing business in Australia in 1954, with the opening of its first travel office in Sydney. In 1974, their local focus shifted to payment products when they introduced the first American Express Card.

They have continued to grow their merchant base, products, programs and initiatives, connecting consumers, businesses and merchants. They have over 1,500 employees in the region working across offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, and throughout the country remotely.

In Australia, the business is carried out by American Express Australia Limited (AEAL) which is wholly owned and controlled by the parent entity, American Express Company, which was established in 1850. American Express has grown in popularity because of its credit card.  It also offers personal, small business, and prepaid travel cards, a membership rewards program, and financial education.

With a 170-year history of service, trust and security, they became one of the most recognized brands globally, providing the world's best customer experience in integrated payment solutions.

Culture & vibe

Amex gains the trust of its customers by ensuring that everything they do is consistent, reliable, and with the highest level of integrity. Their brand and people deliver innovative products and world-class customer service by staying focused on the biggest opportunities to be meaningful to their customers.

They view each other as colleagues, as part of the same team, striving to deliver the brand promise to their customers. Individual performance is also essential and valued, but never at the expense of the team. In addition, they see the diversity of experiences and people as fuel for innovation and creativity to deliver their best.

Recruitment process

The Amex recruitment process consists of multiple steps that require the collection of information about your experience, skills and interests. You start with the application process when you submit your application, along with the information about yourself and why you want to join Amex.

You may be required to take a written test to help them assess you. The test contains technical questions on coding, data analytics, database management systems, or algorithms. The topics of the coding part can range from Java to knapsack problems.

The next step will be the interviews which consist of a technical one and the HR session. In the HR session, they usually ask general questions on current events and many subjects. Knowing about the possible interview questions can improve your chances of landing a job with them.

Career prospects

One of the things that set American Express apart is growing great leaders. They back their employees by providing innovative learning experiences that enable them to build new skills, reach their career goals, and develop as leaders at all levels. Great mentoring from the team leaders also allows you to grow in the role and expand into other areas of the business.

Social Contributions

Much of their contributions are made through their community partners. These include Two Good Co. (a social organisation that employs vulnerable people to empower them), The Australian Literacy & Numeracy Foundation (supports early literacy programs in the indigenous communities of remote South Australia), and the Redfern Legal Centre (provides legal support and mentorship for people experiencing financial abuse).

Besides helping vulnerable communities, Amex Australia also helps small businesses thrive. Small businesses are crucial to the economies of Australia since they employ large portions of the workforce, support local organisations, and often give young people their first jobs.

One of these initiatives is Amex's annual Shop Small campaign, a movement to promote their products and services and connect businesses with platforms, support, and marketing they might not be able to access otherwise. Amex also invests in initiatives that encourage their Card Members to spend in small businesses.

In addition, in Australia, Amex offices are located on land traditionally owned by First Nations peoples. Their business has a role in supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
