Bindi Shah completed Bachelor of Science (Environmental), Bachelor of Science (Hons), Master of Business Administration (MBA) at The Universtity of Western Australia. She studied at Duncraig Senior High School. She moved from Kenya in 2002.
Bindi is a Resources and Projects professional with over twelve years of experience working with major Australian companies in the energy, mining, engineering, environmental, rail and town planning sectors. She completed her Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Western Australia in 2017, which enabled her to change career paths from an Environmental Advisor to something different. She enjoys finding pragmatic solutions to complex problems. In her spare time, Bindi can be found organising social events, attempting to rock climb (and failing dismally) and baking odd flavoured cupcakes.
Bindi's journey since UWA.
I started working as an Environmental Scientist/Town Planner after completing my Bachelor's degree, while completing my honours part-time. I’ve worked in various industries but reached a point in my career where I needed change and be a change maker. I completed my postgraduate degree (MBA) and transitioned into becoming generalist where I let the role and can-do attitude define my pathway! My favourite memories at UWA have been the social clubs, the people in the cohorts, the academic personalities, the late nights with no sleep, international travels etc.
What’s your passion and how do you want to make a difference in the world?
I do believe in the ripple effect where just helping one person may result in them helping someone else and it carries forward. I’m passionate about sustainability and social impact. Listening to people and their stories, having a mentor or mentee, and connecting people really challenges my growth mindset. I measure success based on this. Volunteering time to people and causes continues the ripple effect.
What is the most interesting aspect of your career? Where could it go from here?
I can be working on technical pieces to broader and more strategic pieces at any given point in time. I have been enjoying solving complex problems in various fields by identifying gaps, challenge the status quo, improve inefficiencies and find pragmatic solutions. This is achieved with high engagement and collaboration with teams and people from al levels of the hierarchy. No two days look the same and you learn something new every day.
If you could share one piece of advice with a first year student, on their first day at UWA, what would it be?
Don’t be scared of talking to anyone siting next to you. Get to know them, and their story – you never know what that could lead to in the years ahead.
